This paper asked me to watch a movie of my choice (based on a real-life story) that emphasized the importance of investigative journalism in the U.S., and connect various course concepts to the movie's plot. I chose to watch Spotlight because it was an Academy Award Winner, and because I was interested in the story. It was a powerful and interesting movie, and one that will go down in the list of my favorites. More than just being enjoyable, it emphasized the importance of investigative journalism in holding powerful figures accountable. In normal profit-driven media, journalists tend to act as parrots of the administration because it is the easiest/most economical thing to do. This prevents media from performing its purpose of informing the public of important public matters and making sure that powerful figures act in our best interests. This movie (and by extension this class) helped me view journalism from a new perspective, and it helped me realize just how broken the media system is today.
